Backdating of cars is a relatively new craze in the motoring world. If you aren’t aware, backdating refers to taking a new car, and making it look like something older. A very good example the backdating process is this 911 built by Kaege Retro in Germany or this Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing in the US. One UK firm is also getting in on the action, say hello to the Iconic Autobody 387 Speedster.

New made old

The car you are looking at may seem like a neat Porsche 356 Speedster, at least to the untrained eye. Car enthusiasts may guess that it is a replica, which it is, sort of. It is a replica, but it is also a Porsche. Genuine Porsche 356 Speedsters are horrendously expensive these days. The small roadster from Stuttgart has risen in value to the point that few can afford the real deal. Replica 356s have been around for some time. They are, mostly, based on VW Beetle platforms as the two cars were quite closely related to begin with.

Check out this crazy 356 twin-turbocharged 356 called the RSR.

The Iconic Autobody 387 Speedster is based on a 987-generation Porsche Boxster. The car seen here has the full underpinnings of a base-spec Boxster. This includes the 2,7-litre flat-six engine, five-speed manual transmission, suspension and brakes. Iconic clothes the entire car in a glass-fibre body that seem to be of a decent quality. So the car has the classic lines of the 356 with none of the hassle of owning an old car. In contrast to the old look exterior, the interior of the car has been generally untouched. Iconic has retrimmed the Boxster seats in a combination of brown leather and checkered fabric.
