We’ve featured quite a few videos from automotive photographer Larry Chen on our site. His channel on YouTube has some great content. This week’s feature car is a Subaru Impreza 3,6 RS. No, that isn’t a typo that does say three point six.

Beeg engine, little car

Most modified Subarus, the world over, feature some form of turbocharged flat-four engine. Whether it’s a stock motor with increased displacement or an engine from a later car in an earlier shell, they all feature massive turbochargers. This extremely neat GC8-generation Subaru has neither of those recipes.

The owner of this Subaru Impreza 3,6 RS has taken the engine from a Subaru Tribeca SUV (remember those?) and transplanted it into a car that originally had a 2,5-litre force-fed four, in the tried and tested hot-rod formula. The new engine is a 3,6-litre naturally aspirated flat-six, similar in layout to a Porsche 911, and it is mated to a six-speed manual transmission Though mostly stock, the new engine does have a set of aftermarket headers as well as a standalone management system, which means power around the 225 kW mark. There are plans to turbocharge the motor at some point, as expected.

Tailored to suit

Not only does the car have a new engine, but it has several touches that make it quite unique. For starters, it is a two-door version, which is quite rare. It has different front and rear bumpers, a genuine STi wing, Prodrive alloys (in gold, of course) and Brembo alloys, along with several other unique fittings. You can learn all about the Subaru Impreza 3,6 RS from its owner. Even if you aren’t too keen to hear all of the finer details, forward to the latter part of the video to listen to engine note.
