Remember that South African movie The Race-ist? We certainly hope you could wipe your memory if you sat through those painful 90 minutes. How about The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, another clanger that we would rather we hadn’t wasted our time on. However, this new movie about pro drifting looks pretty decent. Alive Hoon debuts in June of this year, though we have no idea if it will make it to SA.

Replicating real life

The storyline behind Alive Hoon is quite a modern take on the genre. An e-sports racer tries to translate his virtual skills to the real world. Taking this approach will probably make the movie more appealing to a young audience than that old “gruff old racer who makes a return to racing after being away from the sport for years” storyline.

There are many action sequences that feature real action instead of CGI. Action sequences were overseen by the legendary Drift King himself Keiichi Tsucihya. Driving scenes were shot at the world-famous Ebisu Circuit. Aside from the protagonist, some of the world’s top professional drifters such as Naoki Nakamura, Daigo Saito and Masato Kawabata were enlisted.
