UK automotive website Car Wow arranges some of the best drag races you’re likely to see on the internet. They pull together some really unique races, such as this Bugatti Chiron against a Formula One car or even this one-make face off between a range of high-performance Audis. However the two cars in this V8 coupe drag race must rate as one of the most unlikely match-ups they’ve organised thus far.

V8 power

The two cars that feature in the V8 coupe drag race are not rivals in any way, except for the fact that they are V8 powered and are rear-wheel-drive. Representing Germany is a Mercedes-AMG SLS Black Series. A Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 flies the Stars and Stripes for muscle car fans the world over. Black Series is the badge worn by the most extreme versions of any AMG two-door family. Similarly, Shelby is the most extreme iteration of any Mustang.

Uneven but closely matched

Powering the mad Merc is a naturally aspirated 6,2-litre V8 that develops 464 kW along with 63o N.m of torque. Those ratings make it the most powerful naturally aspirated passenger car ever sold by the Three-Pointed star. AMG engineers removed 70 kg from the standard SLS for a mass of 1 550 kg, to make the SLS Black Series an even more potent performer.

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 features a hand-built 5,2-litre V8 that is boosted by a supercharger. Peak power is rated at a massive 567 kW with an equally monstrous 847 N.m of torque. However, the American has chomped down on a few more burgers and donuts so it tips the scales at just over 1 900 kg.

AMG claimed that the last of the modern Gullwings can blitz the 0-100 km/h run in 3,6 seconds and has a top speed of 315 km/h. Ford says the Mustang Shelby GT500 can sprint to 100 km/h from standstill in around 3,5 seconds and do a standard quarter mile in under 11 seconds. This will be a pretty close competition.
