The phrase “racecar for the road” is so cliche. It is typically usually used by someone who has never raced or driven a racecar. But never has the adage been more apt than with this Porsche 962.

A Racing Legend

The Porsche 956, and its subsequent sibling the 962 are legends of endurance racing. The Group C racer dominated this form of competition for well over a decade. The car pictured finished ninth overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That was the year when Porsche factory entries and privateers took up eight of the other nine places in the top ten.

The Porsche 962 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3,0-litre flat-six engine. The race-spec motor has a cast magnesium-alloy crankcase with titanium alloy connecting rods and forged alloy pistons. The twin KKK turbochargers help it to produce just over 460 kW along with maximum torque of 630 N.m. Not bad for a car that weighs 900 kg.

Many vote this model as their favourite racecar of all time. One owner went a step further than just owning his dream, he had it converted for road use. BBM Sport in the UK was tasked with the job, as well as registering for road use.

Road Legal

BBM carried out a number of changes and upgrades to make the car road legal and more compliant for road use. This included fitting things like a handbrake, cooling fans for the engine and installation of an ECU with steering wheel mounted mini dash. Headsets and intercoms were installed for passenger and driver communication. Yes, this Porsche 962 has two fully usable seats. Another necessary addition was the fitment of a rear-view camera.

Shortly after the car’s conversion was complete it was driven on an extensive road trip from the U.K. to Germany so the owner and some of his friends could watch the Nürburgring 24 Hours. He sounds like a proper petrolhead.
