The Jaguar Simola Hill Climb took place in Knysna this past weekend.

This premier motorsport event attracts some incredible machinery from all from all corners of SA. Full-blown racecars, road cars and purpose-built machines vie for honours to be the quickest up the 1,9 km-long track.

This is part two of our highlights package. You can see Part One by clicking here.

Gould GR55

Andre Bezuidenhout was the quickest driver to traverse the Simola hill climb. The Cape-based advocate blitzed the course in 35,5 seconds in his Gould GR55. This special racer is built in England specifically for hill climb events. It is powered by a 454 kW 3,8-litre Nicholson-McLaren V8 motor and weighs an incredible 455 kg.

In an exclusive chat with Double Apex, Bezuidenhout had the following to say: “The Simola Hill Climb is really a world-class event and yesterday I think I delivered a world-class run. For an amateur racer that final run was as close to driving perfection as I could achieve.” Look out for more on this car on our site in the upcoming weeks. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

A1 GP Ferrari

Robert Wolk set the second quickest time of the event. Wolk piloted a V8 Ferrari-powered A1 GP single-seater and managed a time that was 2,1 seconds adrift of the winner.

Nissan GTR (R34)

Martin van Zummeren’s Nissan GTR (R34) looks like a run-away from a Japanese GT race series. Not only does it look bonkers but those seated trackside said it sounded like racecar, too, revving to the far side of 8 000 r/min with each gear shift punctuated by a gunshot-like backfire. The yellow monster placed fourth in the modified supercar division.

Jaguar F-Type Coupe

Jaguar employee and expert wheelman, Dawie Olivier, flew the sponsor’s flag high as he placed second in the supercar and road car division. Olivier drove his Jaguar F-Type Coupe (company car, no I’m kidding) to a best time of 44,9 seconds.

McLaren 570S

Izak Spies showed that some supercar owners aren’t just posers. Spies drove his distinctive McLaren 570S to third place in the supercar category.

BMW M5

Many BMW fans got their first taste of the new BMW M5 as it was flung up the course by Rob Gearing. Gearing is seen here four-wheel drifting the new all-wheel drive 441 kW super saloon through one of the tighter corners of the course.

Alfa Romeo Giulia

Part of the Italian contingent was the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio as driven by Piet Potgieter. This red car was one of two entered by Alfa Romeo South Africa.

Nissan GTR (R35)

Wilhelm Baard was quickest of all the modified supercars. Baard’s best time in the highly modified Nissan GTR (R35) was 39,4 seconds. He achieved this time despite ripping off his front splitter on the run after clipping a tyre, this caused a boost pipe to come loose in the process robbing him of power in the final few metres to the line. You can watch a video of an earlier run of Baard’s by clicking here.

Lotus Exige

This Lotus Exige was driven by another Capetonian, Dawie Joubert. The Honda-powered Exige is well known to local circuit racers and it is one of the quickest four-wheel machines to ever lap Killarney Raceway. Joubert finished third in his class.
