Volkswagen fanatics from the around the world gather in a little-known part of Austrian for a gathering known as Wothersee-Treffen in late May every year. What started as a petrolhead meeting dedicated to the Golf GTI decades ago has evolved into a celebration of all things VW-related. The Mother Ship has long been supportive of this event. Each year the company has created something special for its fans and earlier this week unveiled the VW Golf GTI Aurora.

Added firepower

The VW Golf GTI Aurora is powered by a modified version of the company’s ubiquitous 2,0-litre turbocharged engine that is mated with a dual-clutch, seven-speed transmission. Peak power is rated as 279 kW, more than any other GTI ever created. It must be noted that this is just a show special and will not be a series production model.

The Golf GTI Aurora was created by a team of young designers and engineers. The apprentices first created the exterior and interior designs, in particular the rear side cladding and the mounts for the speakers and subwoofer, on CAD computers. The car features a 3 500 Watt sound system that can be controlled via a remote tablet device. Additional displays in the centre console show the driver engine and vehicle data, which is particularly useful on racetracks.

The one-off VW GTI Aurora is painted in Nardo Gray with and Deep Black Pearl Effect, with a hint of Mint Green. The bodykit, rear diffuser and other decorative elements were painted by hand.

The 12th special for Worthersee-Treffen

“By taking part in the Golf GTI Wörthersee project, our apprentices gain wide-ranging and indeed interdisciplinary technical experience for their later careers,” says Christoph Görtz, director of vocational training at Wolfsburg. “The integration of complex digital applications in the vehicle is of utmost importance, as are keeping to a schedule and maintaining quality standards, coordinating with the specialists involved, presenting their results and finding creative solutions to technical challenges.” The 12th vehicle in this project series brings a host of fresh ideas to Wörthersee.
