About two years ago Mercedes-AMG pulled the wraps off the latest generation SL range. Two V8 derivatives were shown at the time, which we covered here with a subsequent inline four also added to the line-up. Now the SL family features a new range topper in the form of the Mercedes-AMG SL63 E-Performance. The latest variant boasts serious performance stats and high-tech hardware.

We take a quick look at the new apex SL as we share five facts about the Mercedes-AMG SL63 E-Performance.

  1. A twin-turbocharged 4,0-litre V8 powers the Mercedes-AMG SL63 E-Performance. The petrol engine works in conjunction with an AMG Electric Drive Unit. Together these generate a total system output of 600 kW and a whopping peak torque value of 1 420 N.m. This makes the Mercedes-AMG SL63 E-Performance the most powerful SL of all time.
  2. The roadster can blast from rest to 100 km/h in 2,9 seconds. It also has a top speed of 317 km/h.
  3. To slow from these speeds the SL63 E-Performance comes standard with carbon ceramic brake discs that measure 420 mm on the front axle and 380 on the rear.
  4. It can travel up to 13 km purely on its on-board battery. This is handy to leave or return home without the V8 bothering the neighbours.
  5. Stability and quick response are taken car of by the standard active rear-axle steering system. The rear wheels steer in the opposite direction to the fronts at speeds up to 100 km/h, or in the same direction at speeds over 100 km/h.
