Fancy a rally car but you’re a big Porsche fan? Well, the German firm may have just the answer for you, the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport Concept.

A running concept

For now the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport is just a concept car, albeit one that runs and will soon be seen in action by the public. The Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport Concept will be the course car at Rallye Deutschland taking place from 16-19 August. As course car, it will run ahead of the field of WRC cars.

The new concept is being evaluated in real-world conditions at the WRC event. If approved by Porsche for production then the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport will compete in the FIA R-GT category for near-production GT circuit racecars.

Stock drivetrain

The Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport is powered by a 283 kW 3,8-litre flat-six engine. As per the road car, the motor is mid-mounted and drives the rear wheels. The drivetrain features Porsche’s dual clutch transmission (PDK) with shift paddles on the steering wheel. For rallying, full underbody protection has been fitted. Energy-absorbing foam, as mandated in WRC cars, has been mounted in the doors.

Porsche hasn’t let slip too much information, from the images we can see the extra driving lights on the bonnet, a roof scoop, and underbody plates to protect the mechanicals. The race-spec wheels are shod with Michelin Pilot Sport rubber.

Famous driver

Behind the wheel is well-known Porsche works driver Romain Dumas. Dumas is the current Pikes Peak record holder and is considered one of the best all-rounders currently in the motorsport arena. Other Porsche drivers Richard Lietz and Timo Bernhard were involved in developing the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport concept rally car.

In their words

“We’re looking forward to seeing how the rally world responds to our FIA R-GT concept study,” says Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, vice president motorsport and GT Cars. “I would like to invite every interested driver and team principal to visit the service park and take a close look at our rally concept car. Based on the feedback and the interest from potential customers, we will then decide by the end of the year whether we’ll develop in the mid-term a competition car for near-standard rallying based on a future Porsche model.”
