Here is your Monday motorsport round-up of the top categories of world motor racing.

Formula 1

After securing pole position in the qualifying session on Saturday, Lewis Hamilton led the French F1 Grand Prix from lights to flag. Hamilton avoided a first corner incident that removed his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas and main title rival, Sebastian Vettel from contention.

Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

The 96th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb took place yesterday. One of the talking points of the event was Volkswagens I.D. R all-electric racer.

Find out more about the special car and its 500 kW powertrain by clicking this link.

VW set out with the aim of setting a new electric car record (which stood at 8 min 57,118 sec) up the famous 19,99 km run. Instead, French driver Romain Dumas (fresh from the 24 Hours of Le Mans race a week ago) shattered the previous all-time record of 8 min 13,878 sec record set by Sebastien Loeb in a very special Peugeot in 2013. The new best time up the 156 turn course now stands at 7 min 57,148 sec. He also broke the electric car record by almost a minute.

“Awesome! We exceeded even our own high expectations with that result. Since this week’s tests, we have known that it was possible to break the all-time record. I still cannot believe that Volkswagen and my name are behind this incredible time. The I.D. R Pikes Peak is the most impressive car I have ever driven in competition,” said Dumas after the event.
