Volvo may be well known for its space-friendly stationwagons, but the brand-new Volvo EM90 is the company’s very first MPV.

“With the EM90, we’re taking Volvo Cars’ heritage and leadership in safety into the exciting new electric MPV segment,” said Jim Rowan, chief executive at Volvo Cars. “It allows us to tap new market demand we’ve not explored before and broadens the appeal of the Volvo brand to more people.”

A New Breed

Earlier this year the Swedish automaker announced and debuted a small SUV called the EX30. The Volvo EM90 is the second such model the Chinese-owned brand. It is an all-electric model from the ground up, with no hybrid or ICE derivatives in the same range. Incidentally, the all-electric model will be coming to SA, as you can read at this link

Lounge On Wheels

Volvo says the EM90 is a car that is designed to be a space where you can find time to connect, think or just relax. To spend time with your loved ones, find peace of mind and enrich your life.

As a result, the EM90 has a luxurious, spacious interior that is covered in premium finishes. It also has a high degree of connectivity to provide plenty of entertainment for occupants. In part this is provided by a pair of high-definition screens, one on the facia and another that folds down from the roof.

A multitude of Bowers & Wilkins speakers are scattered all over the cabin to provide sounds to all occupants. Additional comfort is provided by road noise cancellation technology, dual chamber air suspension and silent tyres.

Battery Power

Volvo says the EM90 provides a range of up to 738 kilometres. The car comes with a massive 116 kWh battery. The battery pack powers an e-motor with 200 kW of power.

Greg Maruszewski, managing director at Volvo Car South Africa: “Local demand for electric vehicles continues to grow at an encouraging pace and we’re well aware that many high-profile South Africans appreciate the space and comfort offered by luxury MPVs. While we have no official announcements to make right now regarding a possible local introduction, we do believe the high-end, fully electric EM90 will be very well received in South Africa by individuals seeking business-class levels of comfort and refinement.”
