A few months Hyundai teased us with a video clip of a new performance hatch being tested in the Arctic Circle (original story here). Today the Korean firm pulled the wraps off the all-new Hyundai i20N. The new derivative from Hyundai is the latest creation from the automaker’s N performance division. The i20N joins the i30N (read our driving review here) and i30 Fastback N among Hyundai’s high-performance line-up. In discussions with Double Apex earlier today, local Hyundai representatives said that they would like to launch the newcomer locally but they have to complete the feasibility study and therefore cannot confirm its local introduction as yet.

Turbo power

At the heart of the Hyundai i20N is a 1,6-litre turbocharged engine. The motor delivers maximum power of 150 kW and a peak torque value of 275 N.m, which places it directly in competition with the VW Polo GTI. With just 1 190 kg to haul the Hyundai i20 N can sprint from 0‑100 km/h in 6,7 seconds and it has a top speed of 230 km/h. The turbocharged engine is mated with a six-speed manual gearbox. The transmission can also be equipped with the N Corner Carving Differential, a mechanical limited slip differential (LSD) to control power transfer to the front wheels.

The transmission has a rev-matching function that synchronises engine speed to the output shaft, what used to be called a heel-toe for experienced drivers. Thankfully the system can be deactivated via a button on the steering wheel for those who prefer the satisfaction of nailing the perfect heel-toe on your own. A launch control function optimises engine speed and the traction control system for quick acceleration from a standing start.

Bespoke appearance

Hyundai designers have differentiated i20N exterior from lesser-powered siblings. The front front bumper has a larger air intake to feed and cool the turbocharged engine. A wider radiator grille, with N logo, features a pattern inspired by a chequered flag. Below the grille is a lip spoiler highlighted in red, as are the new side skirts and the rear. A WRC-inspired roof spoiler is functional and aesthetic in nature. The rear bumper features a built-in diffuser-like element and a triangular rear fog light, similar to that found on the i30N. Other design differences include front LED headlamps and 18‑inch alloys in a grey matte finish shod with 215/40 Pirelli P-Zero rubber that hide N-branded brake calipers.

The sporty treatment continues inside the Hyundai i20N. This includes dedicated sport seats with integrated headrests an N steering wheel and N gear knob and sporty N metal pedals. The black interior features Performance Blue accents throughout and all‑black head lining. Other interior highlights include an optional 10,25-inch LCD touchscreen navigation system with dedicated N content, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
