Battery power

Hyundai Motor Company unveiled the RM20e at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition 2020. Its name, RM refers to “Racing Midship” which is the placement of the car’s powertrain. The ‘e’ refers to its completely electric power source. Interestingly the RM20e is road-legal, which will allow Hyundai to evaluate it on public roads. The company plans to use the Hyundai RM20e as an engineering “rolling lab” for testing high performance technologies. Hyundai has formed a strategic partnership with Rimac Automobili, the Croatian firm that Porsche took a stake in and is responsible for producing the C_Two hypercar. Hyundai Motor Group has set a plan to deploy 44 eco-friendly models by 2025.

According to the company’s press material: the RM20e combines “racecar-like levels of performance, balance, braking, and grip while retaining daily-driver quietness, responsiveness, and road-going capability.”

In his own words

“Our new electrified RM20e pushes the proven RM platform forcefully into a new, environmentally-focused decade of the 21st century, stretching the performance envelope of electrification on normal road environments. RM20e represents a revolutionary new chapter of electrified performance for the Racing Midship series, and our N engineers continue to garner valuable insights in the arena of zero-emission performance dynamics,” says Albert Biermann, head of Hyundai’s N performance division.
