Aston Martin has been developing its very own hypercar for a few years. The Valkyrie has been designed in conjunction with the brains trust from its Formula One partners, Red Bull Racing. This week the F1 team’s drivers got behind the wheel of the Aston Martin Valkyrie at Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit.

F1 tested

Formula One pilots Alexander Albon and Max Verstappen drove the revolutionary Valkyrie at Silverstone circuit. The pair got to test a VP1 prototype of the Aston Martin Valkyrie. It is powered by a 6,5-litre naturally-aspirated V12 engine that features a hybrid system. The prototype was liveried in a Red Bull-inspired design. You can listen to the high-revving V12 at full song on the dyno by clicking here. The duo was briefed on the VP1 test mule by test and development driver Chris Goodwin.

The Aston Martin Valkyrie is supposed to be one of the most advanced hypercars ever produced. According to designer Adrian Newey it will replicate the sensations of a racecar on the road like no other. Mercedes-AMG is also busy developing its own F1-based road car that goes as far as adopting the current specification Formula One engine. Learn more about it at this link. A total of 150 road-going Aston Martin Valkyries will be built.

In their own words

Albon, 23, said of the experience: “It was incredibly exciting to drive and the first thing that struck me was the visual aspect – it looks awesome! It also really feels like a racing car. Obviously there’s still some development to do, but already it feels very good, especially the balance between the corners. You’re missing the outright downforce, but you still feel the Gs in the corners and it definitely reacts closer to an F1 car than a normal road car. I just need to get my hands on one!”

Albon’s team-mate Verstappen: “I was here at Silverstone to watch the first runs of the Aston Martin Valkyrie at the British Grand Prix last year but, of course, to be one of the first guys to drive an insane car like this was really exciting. You can already feel the pace, which compared to a normal car is pretty different! Its levels of downforce are incredible and it looks super aggressive. It was a lot of fun out there.”

Goodwin said, “This event has been an incredibly important step in Aston Martin Valkyrie’s story. To have three cars now running will see the rate of physical development for this exceptional hypercar increase exponentially. Both Max and Alex were both really positive of the direction that we’re currently taking and could see that the ingredients for an exceptionally high-performing car are already there ready to be untapped. To have that second opinion and validation doesn’t mean the hard work is done already, but this is a great step on our journey”.
