In 2018 a new supercar maker joined the ranks of the established players. Brabham is a name that may be well known to Formula One fundis but not to current fans of performance motoring. Two years ago Brabham Automotive launched its first model called the BT62. That is a track-only car, which you can read about here. Today it launched the Brabham BT62R which is the company’s first road-going derivative. Check out a few more track-only supercars at this link.

A family of three

Adding the Brabham BT62R to the company’s existing line-up increases its current offerings to three models. The Ultimate Track and Competition versions are confined to circuit use but the BT62R allows less competitive drivers to enjoy Brabham Automotive’s expertise. Good news for potential South African buyers is that the BT62R is available in right-hand drive. Owners can choose between a Signature Series livery of the customer’s own design or a Celebration Series livery honouring one of the 35 Formula 1 wins achieved by Brabham Formula 1 cars.

V8 power

The new derivative has the same naturally aspirated V8 as its track counterparts but it features a more road-friendly state of tune. Another change is the adoption of a quieter exhaust system. The 5,4-litre unit produces 522 kW (700 hp) and 667 N.m of torque. Brabham says the BT62R boasts the highest-output, naturally aspirated V8 on the market.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential transmission. The unit has revised gear ratios more suitable for road use. Drivers select cogs through steering wheel-mounted paddles. Interestingly, the transmission allows clutch-free changes on track but also has a traditional clutch pedal for smooth operation at lower speeds on public roads.

Road legality

Brabham BT62R seats

To make the Brabham BT62R road-legal it features several changes from its siblings. Key differences include variable ride heights (with 70-, 90-, 110- or 130 mm of clearance) for driving on track and on public roads, air conditioning and heated windscreen, an audio system, a new front splitter and single plane rear wing along with comfier seats finished in either leather and/or Alcantara. Opt for a Celebration Series version and you will get 18 carat gold logos and badges and a bespoke carbon interior. A track pack allows owners to take their road cars to the occasional track outing. This includes a track rear wing, splitter and diffuser.

In his own words

Dan Marks, CEO of Brabham Automotive: “Launching the BT62R is a great achievement for the team at Brabham Automotive. All the requisite design and engineering to turn the track BT62 into the road going BT62R has been done in-house by our team of engineers, which is a great testimony to their endeavour and expertise.”

“This is a significant milestone for Brabham Automotive as we continue towards the launch of our next car, which will be a fully homologated road car. We will be making further announcements about this exciting next chapter in the coming months. For now, customers can get a taste of what it is like to drive a Brabham on the road with the BT62R.”
