If you’re a regular reader of our website you’d have seen the record price achieved by a new car at an auction. We posted the article on the one-off Bugatti Chiron Profilee earlier this week (link here). This story may, in some respects, be even more impressive as a Mk2 VW Golf GTI 16v has just sold for a record price.

Another Auction

US auction website Bring A Trailer has gained quite a reputation worldwide. The online portal has featured some very interesting cars, with a few fetching top dollar. A prime example is this E30 BMW M3 that ratcheted up to R4,1m.

Another Record…?

A rather neat Mk VW Golf GTI sold for the princely sum of $87 000 on January 29. Before you reach for your calculator, that’s R1 485 799 using today’s exchange rate. That has to make it the most anyone has paid for a regular road-going Mk2. This 1992, big bumper 16v example has just 85 000 km on the odo, which is almost nothing considering that it’s a 30 year old car.

We gotta say, we did call it a few years ago that the Mk2 Golf GTI is a future classic, as you can read here. Although, we would not have expected this level of escalation in value. And we certainly hope that locals with neat Mk2s don’t start advertising their cars for ludicrous amounts. You can read more about the feature car and check out a truck-load of images on the original sales listing by clicking here.
