It seems that a new, track-only, supercar is launched every other week. There must be enough demand or these models would not be as rife as they are today. The latest name to join this rarefied club of special cars is Brabham. Some may recognise the name as belonging to triple F1 champ, Sir Jack Brabham. This car, called the Brabham BT62 was created by Brabham Automotive, a company headed up by Sir Jack’s son David.

Lightweight

The new model is powered by a, mid-mounted 5,4-litre naturally aspirated V8. The engine produces 525 kW and a devilish 666 N.m of torque. Drive is fed to the rear wheels by a six-speed Holinger sequential gearbox. All up the BT62 tips the scales at just 972 kg. The BT62 features aerodynamics to aid grip, including an adjustable rear wing, which repostedly produces more than 1200 kg of downforce. Helping the BT62 to stop are F1-style six-piston carbon-on-carbon Brembo brakes.

Limited numbers

The Brabham BT62 will be in short supply as just 70 will be produced at the company’s Australian base. All new buyers will be invited to participate in the Brabham driver development programme. This will hone the driving skills of the lucky owners to fully exploit the capabilities of the racer. No news on whether any will make their way to South Africa, but the car will be made in RHD on special request, so don’t rule it out.
