Ford’s investment in Mustang keeps it ahead of the pack as the best-selling sports car over the last 10 years. Not surprisingly, it’s home market is where it sells the most, but it has gained ground in markets abroad too.

The Ford Mustang has maintained its position as the world’s best-selling sports car over the last decade, according to recent data from S&P Global Mobility. Despite fierce competition from other performance models, the Mustang has remained the top-selling choice. This can be accredited to Ford’s continued investment in the model.

Strong performance across the globe

To no surprise, the United States remains the Mustang’s strongest market, accounting for 78% of global sales. However, the model has seen growth in other markets, including Germany, Britain, Switzerland, and the Middle East. Here in South Africa, 239 Mustangs have been sold in the past year, bringing the total number of units sold since 2016 to an impressive 3,852 units. We are still yet to learn when the new generation of the Mustang will reach local shores.

New and improved

The new, seventh-generation 2024 Ford Mustang continues the pony car’s reputation of being exhilarating and fun to drive. The range maintains the choice of the 2,3-liter EcoBoost and naturally aspirated 5,0-liter Coyote V8. At the top of the range, for now, sits the Mustang Dark Horse. This is the first performance moniker to be crafted for the model since the Bullitt badge was introduced in 2001. Ticking this box gives it a specially modified 5,0-liter V8 generating 500 horsepower.

Going electric

Embracing the new age of electrification is the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV which is now available in 39 countries. Ford has produced its 150,000th Mustang Mach-E since starting production nearly two years ago. This is a significant milestone as the company aims to scale EV production to a rate of 600,000 annually by late 2023 and more than 2 million annually by 2026.

Confidence from the boss

“We’re proud of the entire Mustang family, what it represents to Ford and especially our passionate Mustang owners and fans,” said Dave Bozeman, the Vice President of Enthusiast Vehicles for Ford Blue and Ford Customer Service Division. “It’s our commitment to serving Mustang’s global community, from Atlanta to Adelaide and beyond, that has earned Mustang the honour of world’s best-selling sports car for 10 years combined.”

Times are changing

It’s likely that the Mustang moniker will eventually reach a fully electrified future as seen with Dodge’s upcoming electrified muscle car. Once it reaches this era, it’ll be interesting to see whether Ford can still maintain this record for its halo product. Given how its F-150 Lightning is flying off the shelves over in the USA, we have little doubt that this title will change.
