Aston Martin has been busy of late. The supercar maker launched a brand new Vantage, debuted a track-only version of its Valkyrie hypercar at the Geneva Motor Show and just a few days ago it launched its own submarine. Yes, you read correctly, a submarine.

An odd partner

The British firm teamed up with Triton Submarines to produce a recreational submersible with sports car levels of performance and styling. What you see in the images above is the finalised version of what the sportsub will look like.

“The exterior design of Project Neptune owes a lot to the pursuit of performance,” says Aston Martin EVP and chief creative officer Marek Reichman. “As with the Aston Martin Valkyrie, we have afforded as much attention to the hydrodynamics of the underside as we have the visible surfaces. Some of that detail may never be seen, but its effect will certainly be felt.”

At least it’s a lot prettier (for a sub anyway) than the result of that other partnership, the Aston Martin Cygnet which was just a rebadged Toyota IQ city car.

Not hypercar fast but luxurious

No details of the powertrain were released, but reports claim that the Neptune will top out at just over 9 km/h. It will enjoy a dive depth of 500 metres (we have no idea if that’s good or not because we’ve not reported on submersibles before).

Inside the cockpit three occupants can enjoy levels of luxury as experienced in Aston Martin road cars, which the aquanauts probably own. That acrylic dome will allow passengers to enjoy near uninterrupted views of the waters ahead.

Oh James…

Since her majesty’s best-known spy is currently an Aston Martin driver, maybe he’ll use this for his next underwater scene instead of plunging one of his cars into the ocean.
