Porsche is celebrating 75 since its very first car, the 356, hit the road. To earmark this occasion the German automaker has produced the Porsche Vision 357. This is a concept car with a strong nod to the 356.

“We created a very special birthday present in the form of the Porsche Vision 357, one which uses the 356 as a basis to underscore the significance of our design DNA,” said Michael Mauer, vice president Style Porsche. “The concept car is an attempt to combine the past, present and future with coherency, featuring proportions that are reminiscent of its historical archetype and details that visualise the outlook for the future.”

The Old

Without the limitations of series production, Porsche designers could produce a modern-looking model that still keeps a healthy dose of the old.  The windscreen sharply wraps around the A-pillars. The A-pillars of the Porsche Vision 357 are black and wrap around to the side windows This DLO (daylight opening) graphic is supposed to mimic the visor of a helmet.

Other ‘old’ world themes are the concealed door handles as well as the vent graphic in the rear deck-lid, very similar to 356s. The entire body is covered in a silver-grey hue that was all the fashion when 356s were brand new.

The New

However, the model has several touches that bring it straight into the modern age. Among these are the 20-inch magnesium wheels that are equipped with carbon fibre hubcaps and central locks. The biggest nod to the new ages is what lies under the skin.

The Porsche Vision 357 has the same 4,0-liter six-cylinder engine that you’ll find in the 718 Cayman GT4 RS. It produces 368 kW of power with a peak torque value of 449 N.m. That is a fair deal more than the VW Beetle-derived flat-four delivered in a 356. Let us know what you think of the Porsche Vision 357 on our Facebook page.
