Toyota GR Corolla SA pricing has been released via the company’s official website. And, as expected, it is quite competitive (see bottom of this post). This takes the list of Gazoo Racing-developed models up to four, namely the GR Supra, GR Yaris and GR86. The GR Corolla will be available in two derivatives, namely Core and Circuit.

Turbo Triple

The GR Corolla is powered by the same 1,6-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine that is found in the smaller GR Yaris. However, the G16E-GTS unit has been massaged to deliver 221 kW. The engine is available exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission that is connected to an all-wheel-drive system.

Toyota SA confirms the GR Corolla has a top speed of 230 km/h, but not advertised any acceleration figures. The car was seen in action at the recent Simola Hillclimb in the hands of one of GR Toyota’s works drivers.

Key Differences

The Core and Circuit are near identical in terms of what they have to offer. Both versions comes standard with dual-zone climate control, wireless mobile phone charging, adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist. However, as the names denote there are key differences that make the more suited to certain usage.

The Circuit and Core have the same powertrain, but the Circuit adds limited-slip differentials on both axles. In an effort to reduce mass and lower the centre of gravity it also boasts a carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof. From the outside it can be differentiated by its gloss black grille.

GR Corolla pricing (below) shows that the model is more wallet friendly than the VW Golf R (R912 800) and the recently released Honda Civic Type R at R979 000 (more info here). The VW is only available with a dual-clutch transmission, while the Honda has six-speed manual, it is front-wheel drive. In that regard the GR Corolla doesn’t really have a direct rival on the local listings.
