Concept cars are cool. They give us an indication of what to expect from a particular brand going forward. Themes and ideas developed on design studies are carried into production in one form or another. But what if you are a design student who has a great idea for a concept car? Esa Mustonen was lucky enough to take guidance from the design team at Koenigsegg and created this masterpiece called Raw by Koenigsegg.

Talented student

Finnish student Mustonen studied at the Lahti Institute of Design in Finland before serving an internship at Hyundai’s luxury brand Genesis and Renault. His most recent stint was under the guidance of Christian von Koenigsegg and the brand’s head of design Sasha Selipanov. With the help of the Swedish hypercar manufacturer, Mustonen has imagined an entry-level supercar under the Raw by Koenigsegg banner. The dramatic design was created by the Finn then gradually honed with the help of Koenigsegg.

Futuristic appearance

The overall appearance is quite angular, unlike other Koenigsegg designs, and futuristic especially with those body-wide light bars front and rear. You can see a slight hint of the Swedish firm’s design language in the roof and the way the doors open (watch the video below to see them in action). Active aerodynamics are also at play as seen in the jet fighter afterburner-inspired movable rear diffuser.

Three-seater

Raw by Koenigsegg monocoque

The basis for the car is a carbon-fibre monocoque, which features a three-seat arrangement similar to the legendary McLaren F1. Mustonen says sim racing rigs inspired much of the interior, including the driver’s seat sitting on two rails. A small race-style steering wheel has three screens that relay vital information to the driver.

Powerplant

Powering the Raw by Koenigsegg is a version of Koenigsegg’s three-cylinder engine (dubbed Tiny Friendly Giant). The camless 2,0-litre turbocharged engine produces 441 kW (600 hp) in the recently launched Gemera four-door hypercar. In this car, the engine will be tuned to 515 kW/700 hp. With 700 hp and tipping the scales at 700 kg, the concept has a power to mass ratio of 1:1, similar to another Koenigsegg, the 1 000 kW One:1 hypercar. For now, it remains a concept, but wouldn’t it be cool if they actually built it?
