Porsche is busy celebrating its 70th birthday this month, so there has been plenty of activity coming from the company’s newsroom. At its big birthday bash at the factory, the Germans showcased a new concept car and announced the name of its new all-electric sportscar.

Porsche Taycan

The Porsche Mission E Concept has been the working name for an upcoming new sportscar from Stuttgart. As of a few days ago, the German firm announced (in this video) that the all-new model will be named Porsche Taycan.

Not the most evocative of names, Porsche says the name is roughly translated as “lively young horse”, referencing the Porsche crest, which has featured a leaping steed since 1952. It’s vitally important not to confuse it with a Prancing Horse…

Plenty of err,… horsepower

The Taycan will be powered by electric motors alone with a system output of over 440 kW. Porsche says that it will accelerate the electric sports car to 100 km/h in well under 3,5 seconds and to 200 km/h in under twelve seconds. Even better is the vehicle’s maximum range of over 500 km in accordance with the NEDC.

Porsche 911 Speedster Concept

The 911 Speedster Concept revealed as part of the birthday celebrations is a historical nod to the very first Porsche 356 ‘No. 1’ Roadster. The new model was developed at the Porsche Motorsport Centre, which is where 911 GT2 RS and the GT3 RS models are created.

The base from which the Speedster was created is a 911 GT3. It is safe to say that engine has the same source. Porsche says that flat-six engine in this concept delivers over 370 kW and can rev up to 9 000 r/min. It is mated with a six-speed manual transmission. Classic Fuchs rims in 21-inches are both retro and modern at the same time.

Although still considered a concept, the Speedster may get the production nod, but only in 2019
