The Lotus/Caterham 7 is about as barebones as they come. A powertrain, four wheels and two seats, all in the pursuit of driving purity. If you like the concept of a lightweight speedster, but not the Caterham’s aesthetic then Camal Studio has just the thing. Say hello to the Scoperta. Camal Studio’s press material states that: car designed for limited series construction, which can be homologated for road use, and can be configured as desired by customers. If you have to know, the Scoperta costs about R2,9m (at today’s forex rate) before being imported into SA.

Looking Back
Camal Studio is an Italian firm that has taken the Caterham concept and covered it in a body that is reminiscent of performance cars from the 1960s, such as the 1955 Ferrari Monza. As a result the British sportscar now wears a more sinuous body in a Barchetta style. The Scoperta has a long bonnet, short overhangs with the occupants placed near the rear axle. The interior has also been given the once over. The images shown are renders, but it seems Camal Studio complete replaces the Caterham’s utilitarian facia. The new look is minimalist with a bar-style speedo and rev counter

Low Mass
Caterham 7s are known for their low mass, which results in excellent performance. Camal uses carbon-fibre and aluminium in an effort to stay true to that ethos. As a result the claimed kerb weight is just 560 kg. Power is derived from a Ford-sourced 2,0-litre engine. The naturally aspirated engine produces 177 kW of power. All of that is sent to the rear axle. If we go by the digital renders, the transmission is a five-speed manual. The Scoperta weighs about a third of a Honda S2000, but has the same power output… that should make it massive fun to drive.
