Michael Schumacher is considered, by many, to be the greatest Formula One driver of all time. The German has seven F1 world titles to his name and sits second on the list of all-time race wins behind Lewis Hamilton. Few may know that the ex-Ferrari pilot started his F1 career at Jordan F1. Now, the Schumacher Jordan F1 car that launched his career, is up for sale. Auction house Bonhams has the historic single-seater listed on its website.

Schumacher Jordan 1991

Schumacher was a rising star in the Mercedes-Benz sportscar racing team in the early 1990s. Regular Jordan F1 pilot Betrand Gachot was not available to race at the 1991 Belgian GP after an altercation with a policeman in the UK. Team owner Eddie Jordan signed Schumacher to deputise at Spa-Francorchamps. The young German stepped up to the task, placing the Jordan 191 in seventh place on the grid, the team’s highest starting position of the year. With that performance the 22 year old announced himself to the F1 world.

Michael drove just the single race for Jordan F1 which makes the Schumacher Jordan F1 car quite a rarity. Ex-Benetton boss Flavio Briatore wrestled Schumacher away from Eddie Jordan’s team. At Benetton he would win the first two of his seven titles.

In 2018 UK publication The Telegraph awarded the 191 the prize of Best Looking F1 Car of all time. In 2021, Mick Schumacher, son of the multiple champ, took the Jordan 191 for a drive around Silverstone, making it one of a handful of racing cars driven by two Schumachers. Andrea De Cesaris and Alex Zanardi are other F1 notables who drove this very same Jordan 191.

A Working Piece of History

The Schumacher Jordan F1 car remains in working condition to this day. The car comes with starting equipment including pre-heater, a history file with a certificate of authenticity. Langford Performance Engineering – the same company which rebuilt the engines back in 1991 – are responsible for the upkeep of 650 bhp (485 kW) Ford engine. If we had the money, we’d not hesitate to add this piece of history to our garage.
