Many purists may have balked at the idea of Porsche building an all-electric model, probably in the same way they weren’t happy with the arrival of Porsche SUVs. However, the Cayenne saved the German firm and the Taycan is already proving to be a top-seller and now Porsche expands Taycan spec and colour choices.

The Taycan has accounted for approximately 20 000 Porsche vehicles delivered in the first half of 2021 alone. The half-year number for 2021 is only slightly below the total for 2020. Taycan sales are on par with those of the 911.

“The continuous technical development of our vehicles is part of the Porsche DNA. The latest generation of Taycan impresses with seamless smartphone connectivity, which now includes Android Auto,” says Kevin Giek, vice president model line Taycan. “Our all-electric Taycan range is growing and thriving. The new Cross Turismo, which was added to the line-up in spring, is proving extremely popular with our customers, as has been shown by the excellent number of orders being taken for it.”

New tech

As of September Porsche will up the ante with both variations of the battery powered car, regular Taycan and Cross Turismo, by increasing the levels of connectivity and offering bespoke colour options for adventurous buyers. Another change is to the energy management system.

In Normal and Range modes, the front electric motor is almost completely decoupled in the all-wheel drive variants. Furthermore, no drive is transmitted to either axle when the car is coasting thereby reducing drag losses. The motors are switched on again within milliseconds only when the driver requires more power.

Other tech changes include the integration of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay into Porsche’s touchscreen infotainment interface called PCM. The layout and operating system have been revamped slightly. There are now five menu options instead of three on the left side of the central display and the icons can be arranged individually.

Standing out

Taycan models are now also available with paint-to-sample (ie owner’s choice) in addition to 17 standard paint colours. A new range of hues includes Moonlight Blue Metallic, Acid Green, Rubystar Red (pictured), Riviera Blue and Viola Metallic colours. Paint to Sample Plus gives customers almost complete freedom in their choice of colour.
