“The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX is how we imagine the future of electric cars. Just one-and-a-half years ago, we started this project leading to the most efficient Mercedes-Benz ever built. Importantly, it has an outstanding energy consumption of less than 10 kWh per 100 kilometres. It has a range of more than 1 000 kilometres on a single charge using a battery that would fit even into a compact vehicle. The Vision EQXX is an advanced car in so many dimensions – and it even looks stunning and futuristic. With that, it underlines where our entire company is headed: We will build the world’s most desirable electric cars.” Ola Källenius, chairman of the board of management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG.

Sleek and slinky

To help push the adoption of EVs and to eliminate range anxiety Mercedes engineers and designers have reimagined and engineered the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX from the ground up. Lightweight materials have been employed wherever possible in the construction, right down to the construction techniques. These mimic that of the natural world. Structural components are only as heavy and strong as they need to be.

Lightweight and exotic materials account for a total mass of 1 750 kg. These include magnesium wheels, aluminium alloy brake discs, carbon and glass-reinforced plastic doors, and the slim roof panel whose 117 solar cells

Exterior designers and aerodynamicists delivered a #benchmark drag coefficient of cd 0,17, which accounts for that sleek shape with an elongated tail. Incidentally, the rear end features an adjustable diffuser so as to remain as aero efficient as possible at all times.

High-efficiency powertrain

Mercedes-Benz turned to engineers High Performance Powertrains (HPP) and Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix (MGP), the same folks who produced Mercedes-AMG F1 powerplants, for the battery and motor in the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX.

The battery is a 100 kWh unit with 900 Volts max voltage. From a full charge, the battery is said to provide 1 000 km of range as it feeds the 150 kW motor. Mercedes says the Vision EQXX drivetrain is 95 per cent efficient. That means up to 95 per cent of the energy from the battery ends up at the wheels.

High-tech interior

In keeping with its exterior appearance and high-tech underpinnings, the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX has a cabin-wide seamless display that spans 121 cm. It has 8k resolution and runs a smart AI-based navigation system. It features 3D graphics that can depict a city from a satellite view. Additionally, it can also suggest the best routes for the most efficient battery usage.

Notably, the cabin makes use of sustainable materials for the trim. This includes vegan leather that comes from mushrooms, pulverised cactus fibres, and bamboo-based carpets.
