Amidst the myriad new models and glitzy hyper performance cars on show at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, it was the cute little retro Honda Urban EV Concept that garnered the most positive reaction from all in attendance.

International praise

An international panel, comprising 12 automotive journalists, named the Honda Urban EV Concept as ‘The Best Concept Car’ in the renowned 2018 Car Design Awards, presented at the recent Turin Motor Show.

But the Honda Urban EV Concept isn’t just a flight of fancy. The design sets the direction for Honda’s first battery electric car for Europe, which will be introduced late next year.

Funky retro looks

When first seen last year many felt that the Honda Urban EV Concept had a retro look about it, almost like a modern-day interpretation of the Mk1 Golf.

The wide stance slim A-pillars and a wide windscreen are design cues not seen on many cars today. Unlikely to make it to production are the rear-hinged coach doors.

At the front, the Urban EV Concept features a screen that can display messages between the headlights, including greetings, advice for other drivers on the road, or charging status updates.

Cosy inside

Natural materials and an open-plan cabin are highlights of the interior. The front and rear bench seats were trimmed in natural grey fabric accented by wood finishes on the facia. The loungey feel is contrasted by a high-tech ‘floating’ dashboard with a wrap-around screen that runs behind the console and extends into the doors.

Heading into production

Honda’s Urban EV Concept will be the first pure electric car to go into series production under the Honda’s ‘Electric Vision’ strategy in Europe. This strategy includes the development of a dedicated electric vehicle platform, featuring fully-electric Honda powertrain technology.

“Our Urban EV Concept is the true representation of ‘We make it simple’ design idea, which aims to make cars closer to people’s hearts,” said Makoto Iwaki, Honda R&D Executive Creative Director. “I express the utmost gratitude on behalf of our entire Honda design team to the jury who valued our unique proposal, which we feel contrasts with the recent car designs. The production car based on this concept model is currently underway, which will be easy to access, fun to drive, and make everyday life more fulfilled and joyful.”
