Motorsport Origins

Audi Sport can trace its roots back to quattro GmbH, which has existed since 1983. Audi’s performance arm was renamed Audi Sport GmbH in 2016.

“We look back proudly on the past 40 years and want to be even stronger in the future. To this end, we will selectively expand our model portfolio and our other service offerings together with Audi AG. The sales records of recent years clearly underline our ambitions,” says Rolf Michl, managing director of Audi Sport GmbH.

Legendary Machines

The Audi Sport story stretches back to the wastegate whistling Audi Quatros of the Group B rally era. Fast forward and Audi dominated at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, raking in 13 overall victories. Watch one of Audi’s legendary Le Mans racers corner at speeds of up to 340 km/h in this crazy video.

Lessons learnt in racing were translated over the years to produce fast versions of existing road cars. Thes include the RS4 and RS6 wagons that have become a firm favourite. The culmination was the creation of the brand’s very first standalone sportscar, the mid-engined R8.

More recently Audi has embraced electrification. It is the first brand to compete at the gruelling Dakar Rally with an electrically powered vehicle. You can see the RSQ E-tron in action in a series of cool videos at this link. Soon the Four Rings will be seen competing in Formula One as well (as you can read here).
