Yes, you read that right, Double Apex got behind the wheel of a Pagani Huayra BC in the company’s hometown of Modena in Italy. We also managed to record much of the experience to create the video at the bottom of this post.

There are few cars and brands that are high on the ‘dream drives’ list of most petrolheads. A Ferrari F40, a McLaren F1, a Porsche 911 GT3, a Formula One car and a modern Bugatti of any description must rate high on most lists. We’ve always dreamed of driving a Pagani, but knew that the chances were slim we’d ever achieve that. However, the stars seemed to align and that dream became a reality a few weeks ago. A reality that we managed to capture on film.

A few months ago we started planning a trip to Italy. The idea was to enjoy a bit of a (Euro) summer break and to also engage with the Italian motoring/motorsport industry while we were there. Some companies were forthcoming and we got to do some really cool stuff during our time there. We attended the inaugural running of the Tutto Bene Hillclimb (which you can read about by clicking here). Racecar specialists Dallara took us on a tour of its facilities and museum (link here). We also made contact with hypercar manufacturer Pagani.

VIP Treatment

The Modena-based company was more than happy to accommodate us. We must admit, that took us a little by surprise. The communications team rolled out the proverbial red carpet and we were treated like VIPs from the moment we arrived. They even flew the South African flag outside their HQ in honour of our visit, check the video. We received a guided tour of the Horacio Pagani Museum (which we captured here). In addition, we took a full tour of the production facility, which we were not allowed to document. The cherry on the cake, or maybe that should be the topping on this delicious pizza, was a passenger ride in one of the cars.

A Stroke of Luck

Pagani doesn’t have a fleet of media cars at its disposal as with most other OEMs, so we were not privy to the latest on offer. The Pagani Huayra BC (pictured) is the company’s development vehicle, a rolling test bed for new innovations. We were going to get a taxi ride with one of the test drivers, or so we were told in advance. The chap in question spoke less English than we speak Italian, so instead, we drove around the Modena area with Sebastian from the communications team who guided us through the car’s intricacies.

On returning to HQ, with a smile on our faces as we had just ridden in a Pagani, the communications manager revealed a surprise that left us speechless: he handed us the keys to this stunning machine. We were floored, completely taken aback by the incredible stroke of luck. We were going to pilot the Pagani Huayra BC. Our smile immediately turned into a wide grin. It all caught us a little off-guard and we weren’t properly prepared. But we shot the footage we could in the limited time we had behind the wheel. We hope you enjoy this first-hand account of our drive of the Pagani Huayra BC in and around Modena.
