Jaguar had a long and successful history of producing sportscars. The brand lost its way for many years under various owners. It is now undergoing a complete metamorphosis. But that doesn’t mean all fans are going to embrace its new outlook. Say hello to the TWR Supercat, a restomod based on the Jaguar XJS. TWR is a name that some enthusiasts may recognise from the world of motorpsort. Tom Walkinshaw Racing was responsible for the creation of many successful racecars. The company has been rejuvenated by Tom’s son, Fergus.

Making Old, New

The TWR Supercat is a complete reimagination of the classic Jag coupe, using new materials, new techniques and a wildly revised exterior. Well known digital designer Khyzyl Saleem was responsible for the appearance of the Supercat

“I am proud to have designed a TWR true to its racing and performance DNA, building on the foundations of one of Britain’s great automotive icons. The TWR Supercat represents an entirely new expression of the original. Collaborating with TWR’s exceptional team of engineers and aerodynamicists, we’ve created a car where every line and feature serves a performance purpose, authentically representing TWR’s legacy on both the track and the road,” said Saleem.

The restyled Cat has a wider body that has been made largely out of carbon-fibre. Additionally, it has been designed to have improved aerodynamics. This includes a more slippery shape with added downforce. The changes include a flat floor pan, reshaped rear arches, a massive curved rear spoiler and diffuser below the rear bumper.

V12 Power

The TWR Supercat retains the Jaguar’s classic V12 engine and rear-wheel drive layout. However, the powerplant has been bored out to 5,6 litres (from 5,3) and now has a supercharger for good measure. The combination produces 492 kW along with 730 N.m of torque. Those figures are pretty handy in a car that weighs over 250 kg less than the original. A six speed manual transmission delivers power to the ground. Thankfully there is a five-step traction control system to help save rear rubber.

Just 88 units of the TWR Supercat will be produced. The number is a nod to Tom Walkinshaw’s win with the XJR-9 at Le Mans in 1988. If you must know, the base price is about R5,2m (calculated using today’s forex rate). But keep in mind that’s before import duties and taxes.
