An all new entry level model has joined the new car market today in the shape of the Toyota Agya hatchback. The newcomer takes over from the Aygo, which silently departed from the sales charts earlier this year. Toyota SA deemed the Indonesian-sourced Agya a better fit for local demands as it has a larger boot (by 92 litres) and the option of an automatic transmission.

Shared technology

A few weeks ago Toyota SA introduced the Starlet to SA car buyers. (You can read our driving review of the Xr derivative by clicking here.) The Starlet is a product of a collaboration between Suzuki and Toyota. The Agya is also a shared technology model as it shares its underpinnings with the Daihatsu Ayla. The latter is a five-door hatchback with generous interior space. Incidentally, Daihatsu is a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation.

First timers

Toyota drops the Agya into the hotly contested A-segment (consisting of small hatchbacks) that is primarily frequented by budget-conscious, first-time buyers. With that in mind the Toyota Agya offers a host of features as standard. The list includes anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution (EBD), 14-inch alloy wheels and dual front passenger airbags. There is also a two-services/20 000 km service plan and a three-year/100 000 km warranty included in the price.

Powertrain

All derivatives in the Toyota Agya hatchback range are powered by a 1,0-litre three-cylinder, fuel-injected petrol engine. Maximum power is rated as 49 kW with a peak torque value of 89 N.m. These power levels, indeed the entire package, brings Toyota’s latest offering quite close to the recently launched Hyundai Grand i10 (which you can read about here). Potential Agya Buyers can opt for a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission; in both cases coupled with the front wheels. Toyota says the manual-equipped Agya sips an average of just 4,8 L/100 km while the automatic version is a tad less frugal at 4,9 L/100 km.

Interior treatment

The Agya’s interior features power steering and climate controlled air conditioning, an on-board trip computer, electrically operated windows, a 12-volt socket for charging mobile devices, keyless start and remote central locking. If you choose the audio-equipped version then you will get to enjoy a double-DIN touchscreen multimedia interface. The unit features CD, Bluetooth, auxiliary and USB connectivity. An optional touchscreen audio system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality is available as a dealer-fitted option.
