Chery has expanded its Tiggo 7 range with a new derivative called the Distinction Dark Edition. It remains a five-seat family SUV based on the Tiggo 7 Distinction, so it is still practical transport with a sensible price tag. The Dark Edition offers a distinctive style and specification, a combination that should make it the one buyers notice first on a showroom floor.
A sharper look
The visual changes are straightforward, and they work. Chery has darkened the grille, the window surrounds, and the alloy wheels, giving the SUV more menace than the standard car. The 18-inch rims help fill the arches properly, while the rear privacy glass finishes the job. That glass does more than hide shopping bags and school kit. Chery says it reduces what can be seen into the rear compartment, while also helping to keep ultraviolet light and solar heat out of the cabin. Ideal for the impending SA summer.
Inside, the Dark Edition keeps the same mood. The upholstery is black faux leather, the trim follows the same theme, and the multifunction steering wheel is wrapped in faux leather as well. It also gets four-way manual adjustment. Four paint choices are listed for the Dark Edition: Khaki White, Carbon Black, Phantom Grey, and Black and White two-tone.
The gearbox change
The most meaningful upgrade sits under the bodywork. Chery has replaced the previous CVT with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. This is a more substantial move than many buyers will realise at first glance. A DCT gives the driver cleaner responses and a more direct connection between throttle input and forward motion. A CVT can be efficient and easygoing, but it often blurs the sensation of acceleration. The Dark Edition should feel more eager in everyday driving.
Power still comes from Chery’s turbocharged 1,5-litre petrol engine. Output is listed at 108 kW and 210 N.m, sent to the front wheels. Eco, Normal, and Sport modes are part of the package, so the driver can soften the responses for commuting or sharpen them up a touch when the road opens. Fuel use is rated at 6,9 L/100 km.
Safety update
The other headline change is the move to seven airbags. The previous Distinction made do with four, so this is a meaningful jump. Side curtain airbags are now part of the mix, broadening protection across the cabin and improving the car’s ability to shield occupants in a side impact or rollover situation. The standard equipment list also includes tyre-pressure monitoring, an anti-theft alarm, rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera with dynamic guidelines. For a family SUV in this price bracket, that is a solid spread of passive and practical safety equipment.
The cabin tech package is familiar Chery fare: generous. The dashboard is dominated by a curved dual-screen arrangement, pairing a 12,3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 12,3-inch central touchscreen. Apple CarPlay is supported, along with intelligent voice commands, and sound is handled by a six-speaker audio system. Convenience items are stacked in too. Keyless entry, one-button start, and dual-zone climate control all come standard. The Dark Edition also adds a power tailgate with smart-key operation, which saves effort when your hands are full of bags, sport kit, or whatever else families end up lugging around.
The new Chery Tiggo 7 Distinction Dark Edition is priced at R415 900.
