Porsche is probably the world’s leading producer of customer racing cars. During 2018 we brought you stories on the Porsche GT2 RS Clubsport, a very special, limited-edition Moby Dick replica and the Porsche Cayman GT4 rally concept, to name just a few. 2019 adds to that list the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport.

A revised package

The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport is a newer take on the car that debuted three years ago. For the first time, the mid-engine racer comes in two versions from the factory. A Trackday model is for ambitious amateur racing drivers and a Competition variant complies with national and international motor racing.

Powering the 718 GT4 Clubsport is a 3,8-litre flat-six engine that produces 313 kW at 7 800 r/min, which is 30 kW up on its predecessor. Peak torque is 425 N.m. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a Porsche dual-clutch gearbox with six gears and mechanical limited slip differential. The lightweight spring-strut front suspension is shared with the 911 GT3 Cup. Steel brake discs all round measure 380 mm in diameter. Standard fare in the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport includes a welded-in safety cage, a racing bucket seat as well as a six-point harness.

Two flavours

The Trackday version features a fixed shock absorber setup. The ABS, ESC and traction control assistance systems ensure forgiving handling at the limit and can be deactivated. Part of the package includes air-conditioning system, a rescue hatch in the roof, a handheld fire-extinguisher and an 80-litre fuel tank. The 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport Trackday can be serviced at any Porsche dealer.

The Competition model is a little more hardcore. The shock absorbers feature three-way adjustment. The fuel tank is 115 litres. It has a brake balance system, an integrated air jack system,  quick-release racing steering wheel and an automatic fire extinguishing system.

New developments

The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport is the first ever production racecar to feature body parts made of natural-fibre composite material. The doors and the rear wing are made of an organic fibre mix, which are sourced primarily from agricultural by-products such as flax or hemp fibres and feature similar properties to carbon fibre in terms of weight and stiffness.
