Background

The Renault R5 Turbo (yellow car pictured above) was a homologation special that was created by the French manufacturer in the early 1980s. It was built with the express intent of going rallying. To make the 5 more adept for rally stages the engine was moved behind the front passengers and the car was converted to rear-wheel drive. The Legende Automobiles Turbo 3 is a modernised version of the original. To make it a formidable performance car and driving machine, every aspect has been refined, updated or redesigned.

New take

Starting on the outside the Legende Automobiles Turbo 3 boasts a carbon-fibre body. The original shape has been retained but enlarged in some areas to accommodate the likes of the custom alloys that measure 16×8-inch front and 17×11-inch rear. New LED headlamps give it a fresh face. The rear side glass has air curtains incorporated into the C pillars. A large rear wing sits atop and a custom two-piece diffuser houses dual square exhaust tips. Under the skin the new car has double wishbone suspension.

Inside the Legende Automobiles Turbo 3 has modern creature comforts such as automatic climate control and thin seats featuring large bolsters fitted with racing harnesses for high G-load cornering. Ahead of the driver is a retro-looking two-spoke steering wheel. The instrument cluster is an electronic item. To keep occupants safe there is a roll cage in the rear of the cabin.

There isn’t much detail about the powertrain but reports suggest that there is a turbocharged inline four that produces roughly 300 kW of power. Drive, just like the original, is sent to the rear axle. A six-speed sequential transmission has been adopted, but there are no paddle shifters, drivers will shift manually via a floor-mounted lever.
