The new generation Land Rover Defender has generally been well received. Chunky good looks and, seemingly, go-anywhere capabilities means that it has built well on the heritage of the iconic original. But we’ll reserve our judgement until such time as we get a chance to sample one first hand. Today the company has announced the expansion of the range with the addition of the Land Rover Defender V8. Jaguar SA confirms the range-topper will be introduced locally towards the end of the year.

Heritage continued

Land Rover Defender V8 badge

Of course, a V8-powered Defender is not new. Several models over the Defender’s long history have boasted V8 power. The latest Land Rover Defender V8 features a supercharger to ramp up power to a 386 kW along with 625 N.m of torque, making it the most powerful Defender ever produced by the factory. The engine is available in both 90 and 110 body styles.

To harness the extra power both versions will feature unique suspension and transmission tuning, including model-specific spring and damper rates as well as a new electronic active rear differential. Another revision is the adoption of larger-diameter and solid anti-roll bars. V8 versions have a new Dynamic program within the Terrain Response system. Dynamic program in Terrain Response 2, gives Defender V8 a more agile character. In this setting, drivers enjoy sharper throttle response and bespoke tuning for the continuously variable damping

Bespoke appearance

Land Rover Defender V8 variants feature a number of bespoke exterior enhancements. Among these are V8 exterior badging, quad exhaust tips and unique 22-inch alloy wheels with a satin dark grey finish. Xenon blue brake calipers act on new, larger brake discs.

Inside, Land Rover Defender V8 versions feature seats trimmed in Ebony Windsor Leather with Miko Suedecloth and Robustec accents. The four-spoke steering wheel has an Alcantara rim and satin chrome gearshift paddles, which are unique to V8 models. Leather covers the airbag housing and gear lever, while illuminated step sills sport a V8 script.

In his own words

David Hemming, chief product engineer, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “The introduction of our V8 powertrain adds a new dimension of driving engagement and off-road capability to Defender. Fast and fun to drive, it represents the pinnacle of the Defender family and is as rewarding on the road as it is capable off it. We’ve also broadened the appeal of the entire Defender line-up with new derivatives, option packs and enhanced connectivity, so there really is a Defender for everyone.”
