Audi pulled the covers of two new performance SUVs earlier today: the Audi RS Q3 and RS Q3 Sportback. Cooking varieties of the same model were recently launched into the SA market and these two derivatives mark the apex of the range. The two vehicles are largely similar. As the Sportback name denotes this model has a sloping roofline.

Bespoke appearance

In keeping with their range-topping position, the two RS Q3 variants have model-specific touches to set them apart. These include a large singleframe, gloss black grille with a 3D honeycomb structure. Large air intakes feature boomerang-shaped blades. LED headlights are fitted as standard.

Flared wheel arches and larger alloys create a unique stance for both versions. 20-inch alloys on low profile rubber are standard while 21-inch items are optional.  Dual oval tailpipes signal to those following that these are RS versions. The rear also features an RS-specific bumper with a diffuser.

Audi RS Q3 engine

Turbo power

Audi fans will be happy to note the company has retained its famed inline five-pot motor in the RS Q3s. The turbocharged 2,5-litre engine produces 294 kW and 480 N.m of torque. Audi says the engine weighs 26 kg less than before.

As with all sporty Audi models power is channeled to a quattro all-wheel-drive system after passing through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Audi claims the RS Q3 and RS Q3 Sportback can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4,5 seconds. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h. Six-piston calipers act on ventilated and perforated discs.

Inside

Audi interior cabin designers have created a driver-centric cockpit with the centre console and MMI display tilted towards the driver by 10 degrees for improved visibility and accessibility. Other bespoke touches include sport seats that are wrapped in black leather and Alcantara with RS logos and a flat-bottomed RS steering wheel with newly-designed shift paddles. Luggage capacity is quoted as 530 litres in the boot, which expands to 1 525 litres with the rear seats folded flat.

Our sources at Audi South Africa tell us that the Audi RS Q3 and RS Q3 Sportback will both be introduced to the SA market in the latter half of 2020.
