All-new Jaecoo J5 Slots into SA Small SUV Segment

Chinese automaker Chery has introduced another model into to its ever-expanding portfolio with the introduction of the Jaecoo J5.

#3 in Jaecoo

There is no shortage of small SUVs in the sub R500 000 range in South Africa. Buyers in this segment are really spoiled for choice. That list expanded this week with the introduction of the Jaecoo J5. If you aren’t familiar with the brand, Jaecoo is a subsidiary of Chery Automobile, which sits along side Omoda as part of the O&J siblings. Until now, there has been a single model in the shape of the Jaecoo J7 (which we reviewed). The J5 slots in below its sibling as a smaller and more affordable option.

Familiar Face

The Jaecoo J5 has the design traits that we first saw on the J7. These include slim LED headlamps and a prominent grille up front with vertical slats. Clean lines and squared off wheel arches continue a chunky theme as do large alloy wheels as standard. There are also slim LED taillamps and a smooth finish to the tailgate. Interestingly, the J5 does not wear the flush-fitting door handles that have become quite commonplace in modern SUVs from China.

One Engine, Three Trim Levels

Jaecoo SA has introduced the J5 with a single powertrain. This is a 1,5-litre turbopetrol engine that we’ve experienced in the Omoda C5. This unit produces 115 kW of power and 230 N.m of torque. An automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels. The engine is covered by a ten-year/one-million km engine warranty, but that only applies to the first owner.

Buyers get to choose from three trim levels when buying a new Jaecoo J5, namely Vortex, Glacier and Inferno. As standard, all versions are fitted with automatic wipers and headlights, a 13,2-inch infotainment interface (with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), climate control, electrically adjustable side mirrors, a digital instrument cluster and a four-speaker audio system. Glacier derivatives add leather upholstery, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat and two more speakers. The range-leading Inferno adds dual-zone climate control, a powered tailgate, ventilated front seats, a wireless charger and an eight-speaker sound system.
