There is no shortage of small SUVs in the sub R500 000 range in South Africa. Buyers in this segment are really spoiled for choice. That list expanded this week with the introduction of the Jaecoo J5. If you aren’t familiar with the brand, Jaecoo is a subsidiary of Chery Automobile, which sits along side Omoda as part of the O&J siblings. Until now, there has been a single model in the shape of the Jaecoo J7 (which we reviewed). The J5 slots in below its sibling as a smaller and more affordable option.

One Engine, Three Trim Levels
Jaecoo SA has introduced the J5 with a single powertrain. This is a 1,5-litre turbopetrol engine that we’ve experienced in the Omoda C5. This unit produces 115 kW of power and 230 N.m of torque. An automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels. The engine is covered by a ten-year/one-million km engine warranty, but that only applies to the first owner.
Buyers get to choose from three trim levels when buying a new Jaecoo J5, namely Vortex, Glacier and Inferno. As standard, all versions are fitted with automatic wipers and headlights, a 13,2-inch infotainment interface (with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), climate control, electrically adjustable side mirrors, a digital instrument cluster and a four-speaker audio system. Glacier derivatives add leather upholstery, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat and two more speakers. The range-leading Inferno adds dual-zone climate control, a powered tailgate, ventilated front seats, a wireless charger and an eight-speaker sound system.
Jaecoo J5 Prices
- Vortex: R379 900 ( R369 900 for the first month)
- Glacier: R439 900 (R429 900 for the first month)
- Inferno: R479 900
