No surprise

Of course, this news shouldn’t really come as a surprise to anyone who follows the auto industry. Audi has been transforming its range with several new battery-powered models sitting atop the hierarchy. Almost the entire E-tron portfolio will be heading to local shores as early as the first quarter of 2022, as you can read here.

This Audi R8 replacement news came via an interview that Linda Kurz, Audi Sport’s head of product marketing conducted with CNET. In the interview, she said that Audi Sport’s “next challenge” will be working to “transform the R segment, and the R segment is going to be fully electric. This is our job for the next decade.”

Kurz indicated that the car will have no form of an internal combustion engine (ICE). However, she did not confirm if it will still be badged as ‘R’. Audi already tried to introduce an all-electric R8 a few years ago. Called the E-tron GT, the model was seemingly a sales disaster. Perhaps Audi will leave the R8 nameplate in the history books as a model that came, saw and conquered in a relatively short space of time.

Range-leader aside, RS badged cars soon feature electrification as well. Kurz revealed that by 2026, 80 per cent of the RS lineup will feature some sort of electrification. Purely electric RS-badged models are also on the cards. All of this points to the fact that Audi fans should try to get a hold of their favourite performance model now…
