Here’s a quick look at what you can expect this weekend at the 2023 British Grand Prix.

Often regarded as the home of Formula 1, the British Grand Prix has reshuffled the pecking order on the grid. Williams shocked the paddock with new upgrades that saw them shoot up the order. At the same time, McLaren added more upgrades that saw the British team leapfrog both Mercedes and Ferrari during qualifying.

Trouble at Red Bull

Sergio Perez has not lived up to expectations set at the beginning of the season. After winning a few races, everyone believed that he could pose a threat to Verstappen for the championship.

However, Perez has seen a massive drop off in form over the last few races. Silverstone continued that trend as Perez was relegated again in Q1. While the Mexican driver is great at recovering on a Sunday, with a car that is fast enough to slice through the field, the pressure is on him to perform and secure decent points for the team.

McLaren’s Pace

McLaren may have started the season off poorly, but they have brought impressive upgrades to the last few races. These new packages have worked wonders and landed them on the front row for the 2023 British Grand Prix.

The practice sessions were interrupted by rain, but as the track dried out for qualifying, Lando Norris managed to put his McLaren on the front row. Oscar Piastri followed suit and snatched P3, securing his best-ever start in Formula 1. With the right conditions and strategy, McLaren can score a decent number of points this weekend, reigniting their season entirely.

Ferrari and Mercedes

Ferrari and Mercedes have been trading positions behind Red Bull for the majority of the last 18 months. However, midfield teams like Alpine, Williams, McLaren, and even Haas have managed to outshine them at various races this season.

Mercedes were struggling from the very first practice session this weekend. Lewis Hamilton, the most successful driver at Silverstone, pushed to the limit with only P7 to show for his efforts. The sport’s winningest driver is unlikely to add a 9th home victory to his tally this weekend.

Ferrari were close to Red Bull throughout qualifying, with the McLarens snatching P2 and P3 on the final lap. This results in Ferrari and Mercedes occupying P4 to P7 on the grid.

The race will be on between these two teams, but it’s important to remember that the Mercedes cars tends to have better race pace. This could see the team from Brackley move their way up during the race on Sunday. A podium for Mercedes or Ferrari is not entirely out of the picture.
