Dirt devils

In just a few weeks TGR will compete at the 2022 Dakar Rally. The race will be held in Saudi Arabia once again. Toyota finished second in the 2021 race and TGR will aim to go one better in 2022. To help in that regard the team has built a brand new racer, right here in Johannesburg, dubbed the GR DKR Hilux T1+. You can read more about the new Hilux and the crews who will be racing it at this link.

Endurance champs

Toyota Gazoo Racing 2022 plans include a return to the World Endurance Championship with its GR010. The Hybrid racer will contest the Hypercar class, which it won in 2021 while defending its crown at the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans. Incidentally, Toyota has won four on the bounce at La Sarthe.

New racer

TGR won all three available crowns in the 2021 WRC: the manufacturers’, drivers’ (Sébastien Ogier), and co-drivers (Julien Ingrassia). Notably, the team will be aiming to replicate these feats with a new car called the GR Yaris Rally1. Earlier, the new racer was previewed at the press conference (seen above in heavy camouflage).

The car will compete in the top-flight WRC class that switches to hybrid powertrains from 2022. This drivetrain sees a 1,6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated with an electric motor that adds 100 kW and 180 N.m of torque.

Domestic competition

In addition to the international activities, TGR will also contest the Super GT500 series with the current Supra, the Japanese Rally Championship in the GR Yaris and the Japanese Super Formula Championship.
