There are no shortage of restomods based on the evergreen Porsche 911. Everyone knows the about the classics from California. But there are also options from the likes of UK firm Theon Design. Then the really cool lightweight 912s from Kamm Manufaktur. And now there is a new option from, fittingly, German. Say hello to the TechArt GTclassic.
Mental Machines
Some of you may know TechArt from its far more high-performance 911s. The German firm has been turning up the wick on 911s for near on forty years. It creations are usually based on 911 Turbos, built in limited numbers boasting wild body kits, ramped up power and massive alloys.
More sedate, as desirable
The TechArt GTclassic is none of the above. The small-scale auto company is looking to capitalise on the growing 911 restomod fad. Of course, the familiar silhouette of the 911 is not the only restomod game in town, as you can see by clicking here.
TechArt has taken a familiar approach, starting with a 964-genertion 911. The last of the aircooled 911s makes for a hand canvas as it still casts a rather small footprint. Let’s face it, 911s have, in recent times, packed on the inches. The 964 is given a complete ground up rebuild, but backdated to appear much like an older 911.
The upgrade includes wider rear arches, new vents above the front bumper. In addition there are a pair of intakes on the leading edge of the bonnet, which seem to mimic similar items on the latest 911 GT3. At the rear is a ducktail that harks back to the legendary 2,7 RS.
New tech
As part of the upgrade the TechArt GTclassic features LED lights front and rear. The wheels, which are modern take on the classic Fuchs design, are 18-inch Retrosport forged items. They are two-piece alloys that shroud a massive braking system that features anti-lock brakes.
The new tech continues inside with some deep bucket seats that are covered in period correct upholstery. The facia may look retro, but its all new, including a full suite of wireless connectivity and even navigation by an old-look modern radio. A pair of stopwatches, mounted ahead of the passenger, keep the classic rally theme.
NA power
Staying true to the ‘old is cool’ credo, TechArt keeps an aircooled engine. In its most extreme form the flat-six displaces 3,8-litres. The naturally aspirated boxer delivers 280 kW of power. Peak power wasn’t really the main consideration. Instead, the GTclassic is more about driver engagement. As a result it is paired with six-speed manual transmission – NOICE!
This isn’t the first 911 backdate/restomod to go to market, and we are pretty darn sure it won’t be the last, but we think it’s pretty cool. Although, we are pretty darn sure it will cost a small fortune to buy. See and hear the GTclassic in action in the video below.
