In usual circumstances the Indy 500 is the world’s largest single-day sporting event as over 400 000 race fans are able to fill the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Former Formula One driver Sato claimed his second win at the Brickyard adding to his victory in 2017. There have been some dramatic finishes at Indy, but this year’s event ended with little drama as an accident on lap 195 (of 200) resulted in a full course caution, which is how the race ended (you can see the horrific accident below). Scott Dixon led for 111 laps of the race and looked good for the overall win, until Sato passed him on lap 173, a move that would prove decisive. The Japanese driver set a blistering pace during the closing stages of the race and was leading when the yellow flags were waved.

Former Formula One champion Fernando Alonso returned to have another stab at the Indy 500 in an effort to claim motorsport’s triple crown. The Spaniard has already won the Monaco F1 Grand Prix and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it is only the win in the US that eludes him. He finished 21st, one lap behind the race winner.
