5 Facts About The Porsche 911 GT3 R Rennsport

  1. Just 77 units of the 911 GT3 R Rennsport will be built. Each will cost in excess of $1m. That’s close to 19 million rand (using today’s exchange rate) before you even think of bringing it to local shores. We’re guessing that even if you have that kind of dosh lying around you’d need to be on a first-name basis with Herr Laudenbach to even be considered.
  2. Only the bonnet and the roof were carried over from the standard GT3 R, all other body parts have been changed. Most notable is that massive rear wing, which requires addition bracing for the downforce it produces. Incidentally, that wing takes inspiration from Porsche’s endurance racers of the 1970s. Oh, and the car has no side-view mirrors. A pair of rear-facing cameras on the fenders feed screens in the cabin.
  3. The 4,2-litre six-cylinder boxer engine can rev up to 9 400 r/min. In the process it produces peak power of 456 kW. That’s almost 109 kW/litre. That’s a handy power output on a car that weighs 1 240 kg. The engine can run on E25 bio-ethanol or regular pump fuel.
  4. The engine has no silencers… which probably creates a spine-tingling soundtrack as that naturally aspirated flat-six is reaching for its red line. However, two exhausts systems fitted with silencers and catalytic converters are available for racing circuits with noise restrictions.
  5. The 911 GT3 R Rennsport is shod with bespoke Michelin slicks. These have improved warm-up characteristics and a special motif on the sidewalls.
