South Africa has a terrible road safety record, particularly around this time of year. The onus falls on all road users, including drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists to be vigilant at all times. It is imperative that we all pay attention to the road and surroundings, follow traffic laws, and drive defensively. Here are some key road safety tips ahead of the holiday season.

  1. Follow traffic laws and signals: This seems obvious but it’s worth repeating. Obey speed limits, stop at red lights and stop signs, and yield to pedestrians and other vehicles when required. Be aware of non-functioning traffic lights and how to deal with them during times of load-shedding.
  2. Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy: You may be keen to head out on your vacation, but a roadworthy check is crucial. Check all your tyres, including the spare, for legal tread depth and correct pressures. Have all the tools for a tyre change. Ensure all fluids are at correct levels and wipers are in good order.
  3. Avoid distractions: Do not use your mobile phones while driving. Keep your eyes on the road (and your mirror) and your hands on the wheel at all times.
  4. Use your turn signals: Signal your intention to turn or change lanes to alert other drivers of your actions. Once you start moving its already too late people around you know that something is up.
  5. Be considerate: We have to share the road with thousands of other road users. Be considerate to those around you. Move out of the fast lane the moment you are done overtaking. Do not distract other drivers with your high-beams.
  6. Maintain a safe following distance: Not an easy thing to do in SA’s congested roads. Leave enough space between your vehicle and the one in front to allow for sudden stops or changes in traffic conditions.
  7. Watch for pedestrians: Pay attention to pedestrians, especially those who seem a bit wobbly on their feet. Always yield to pedestrians when they have the right of way. This holds especially true in coastal towns that many of us will be visiting.
  8. Wear your seatbelt: Always wear your seatbelt, regardless of which seat you occupy. Seatbelts can save lives.
  9. Do not drive under the influence of mind-altering substances: Driving while under the influence can impair your judgement and reaction times. If you plan to have a few drinks partake in some recreational drug use, let someone else drive.
  10. Take breaks: Many people make the long trek from inland cities to the coast. If you are feeling tired, pull over and take a break. You’d rather arrive at your destination a few hours late than not at all…
