The iconic Porsche 911 turns 60 this year. To celebrate this anniversary the company has produced a lightweight derivative called the 911 S/T. The addition to the range combines the best of the GT3 RS and the GT3 Touring in one package. It has been developed to provide driving thrills on road rather than on a circuit. Oh, good news if you’re in the market, the 911 S/T will be coming to SA, see bottom of post for pricing.

RS Power

The 911 S/T is based on the high-performance GT3 version of the current range. It has the same high-revving, naturally aspirated engine as found in the hard-core RS. Peak power from the 4,0-litre flat six is 386 kW, achieved at 9 000 r/min.

This engine has been mated with a six-speed manual transmission. This unit has shortened ratios, which aims to provide a more engaging driving experience. A lightweight, single-mass flywheel couples the transmission to the engine. Speaking of which…

Mass Obsessed

The 911 S/T is the lightest 992-generation to date. Porsche engineers took their cues from the 1969 namesake of the newer car. They put the newest 911 on a strict diet. Lightweight measures include the aforementioned clutch, magnesium alloys, composite brakes and rear-axle stabiliser on the mechanical side.

Other items include carbon-fibre reinforced plastic front lid, roof, front fenders, doors, glass and roll cage. The net result is a mass of 1 380 kilograms. Oh,and you’ll notice that the 911 S/T has none of the wild aero of the RS. The net result of the changes is a car that can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3,7 seconds and has a top speed of 300 km/h.
