At the very end of February Volkswagen unveiled the Mk8 VW Golf GTI online (you can read our original story at this link). The newest GTI’s debut at the Geneva Motor Show was scuppered when the event was cancelled due to the spread of the coronavirus. It seems VW is pressing ahead with new model development as the Mk8 VW Golf R was seen completely undisguised at the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

No camo

The apex Golf was seen hard at work as it pounded laps at the famous racetrack in the Eifel region of Germany. We are used to seeing prototypes covered in camouflage as they test at the circuit (as with the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series). In the pics taken this week we can clearly see the tell-tale cues that differentiate the Golf R from its siblings, despite the badges being taped over.

Most noticeable of the changes at the rear are the larger, split-level roof-mounted spoiler, diffuser and quad exhaust tips. Blue brake calipers show an “R” logo inside the front wheels. Speaking of… the large alloys shod with low-profile rubber coupled with a low ride height are giveaways that this is the range-topping Mk8 VW Golf R. If you look closely at images you will note a roll cage inside the cabin, which definitely won’t be standard equipment.

Most powerful

In keeping with its positioning in the range, the Mk8 VW Golf R will be the most powerful member of the family. Power will be derived from the company’s tried and tested 2,0-litre direct-injection inline-four. Reports suggest that the turbocharged unit will produce 245 kW of power. As always drive will be sent to all four wheels via a dual-clutch automated transmission. Expect the Golf R to sprint from 0-100 km/h in a shade under 4,5 seconds and have a top speed limited to 250 km/h.
