Current value: Current valuations on these cars vary drastically as they are appreciating so fast. A decent example will cost you between R100 000 and R200 000. Pristine examples are getting double that, and those overseas even more. A conservative estimate on mine currently is R150 000.

Why I bought this car: I’ve always been a fan of Japanese cars, and I am lucky enough to own a few others. When the time came to look for another car I wanted something classic that had a specific character that appealed to me. After a bit of research I was set on a 280ZX, and a few months later I found one, it was in rough shape but it was worth fixing up.

Common issues with this model: These cars don’t have any major issues, but being 40 years old a lot could have gone wrong if they aren’t maintained correctly. Also if they have spent much time at the coast rust could be a problem at this age.

Major repairs I’ve conducted:
The most obvious issue with this car when I bought it was the bodywork. It was in a really bad shape. I completely redid everything, including changing the colour to a Jaguar F-Type grey. The next issues to tackle were replacing the brake master cylinder and to recondition the cooling system. The suspension was also quite worn out. I upgraded it completely with coilovers which made a huge improvement to the driving characteristics.

The best thing about my car: It can be quite hard to quantify what makes a car great. Its different for every enthusiast. This car has such a unique character that it always puts a smile on my face. Its a combination of the feel, the sounds, the style and the history which I enjoy.

The worst thing about my car: The down side to owning a rare car is it can be difficult to find parts to maintain or upgrade it. Often, the only option is importing or fabricating the parts, but these challenges are part of what makes ownership so rewarding.
