Concours South Africa takes place this coming Saturday, August 11 at Steyn City just outside the Fourways area in Johannesburg. As part of the annual event, 2018 will also host a large South African classic car auction on Saturday afternoon after the show judging takes place.

Star of the sale

Eighty cars in total, 75 from the Plit Portfolio alone, will go under the hammer on Saturday. The sale portion of the event will be handled by international classic car auctioneers Coys of Kensington.

Among the sale items is a completely original Ford Mustang GT500. It is one of just over 1 100 examples produced by Carrol Shelby in conjunction with Ford in 1968. Johannesburg collector Wayne Plit is the third owner of the Shelby GT500.

The car still wears its original paintwork. It was ordered by the original owner with the high-horsepower KR-specification 428 cubic-inch V8, and dual fuel tanks. It still wears its original, unrestored 10-spoke alloy Shelby wheels and a T-bar Hurst shifter (also factory-original) for its four-speed gearbox. The engine has never been opened. The car has covered just over 100 000 km.

“This car may well be the only original, un-restored Shelby GT 500 in existence,” says Concours South Africa organiser Greg Marucchi. “The Mustang is only slightly patinated despite being half a century old, and we would advise the new owner who acquires it at Steyn City on 11 August to preserve its originality as an absolute priority.

Other gems

Other rarities on sale on the day include a 1973 Renault Alpine A110 in the very rare 1600 S specification, which again makes it very desirable on the global market. The car is quite original, still with its factory-fitted roll cage and Alpine-spec alloy wheels.

A red Giulia Sprint Speciale 1600 will go on sale, along with a Giulietta Sprint Veloce from 1962 and a trio of Alfa Romeo Spiders from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. One of these is the very collectible 1600 Duetto round-back version.

A mid-1930s Singer Le Mans, of which only three were ever built is part of the British contingent. Other models include an Alvis TD21 Saloon, an Austin Healey BN1, a Jaguar XK120, a Triumph Spitfire, a Triumph GT6, and a number of TVR’s. There will also be a few original-spec Mini Cooper S models on offer.
