There are countless Chinese carmakers that we are not aware of. Many are hard at work perfecting EV technology for their home market. Although we have no doubt that tech will filter into the wider car market. This week BYD showcases innovative suspension technology that will be rolled out on its high-end Yangwang brand.

“Traditionally, luxury cars were determined by brand and history. For luxury new energy vehicles, it’s a matter of what tech and products,” said BYD founder Wang Chuanfu at a recent event.

Heavy Hitters

BYD is backed by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway investment company, so you know they mean business. BYD unveiled a new Intelligent Body Control System that it announced at an event in Shenzen on Sunday.

The company’s press info reads: “DiSus Intelligent Body Control System is profiled in three branches, including the Intelligent Damping Body Control System (DiSus-C), the Intelligent Air Body Control System (DiSus-A), and the Intelligent Hydraulic Body Control System (DiSus-P).”

DiSus-C adjusts the damping of the vehicle for ride comfort. DiSuS-A is similar to traditional air suspension, allowing the vehicle’s ride height to be adjusted by up to 150 mm. DiSus-P can control the oil intake of the damper, damping adjustment valve, and stiffness adjustment valve, while offering travel of up to 200 mm.

Roll Out

The system was showcased on the company’s soon-to-be-launched Yangwang U9. The EV hypercar equipped with DiSus-X showcased its ability to dance, jump and even drive only on three wheels. See videos below for the full demonstration.

However, the first production model to feature the tech will be the range-leading U8 SUV pictured above. The quad-motor Yangwang U8 produces a total system output of around 820 kW of power and has torque-vectoring functions including crab walk and tank turn.
